Thanking Your Carriers

GENERAL

The hard work of delivery drivers often gets overshadowed by a few dark horses who dump packages and grumble about their jobs. However, these drivers (even the cranky ones) help to deliver the clothes we wear, the electronics we use, and the presents that accompany our holidays and birthdays. And they often do it in difficult conditions, with reportedly delivering roughly 200 packages daily, even in inclement weather and sometimes on rough and rural roads.

So how can we thank the drivers who work hard to fulfill our needs and wants?

  1. Say thank you. It doesn’t cost you a cent. Make a conscious effort on a monthly basis to connect with your regular carriers as they arrive at your property.
  2. Leave treats!
    • In the heat of summer, a thank you sign by a cooler with water or soft drinks for your driver can be a fantastic way to look out for them.
    • Leave out candy at Halloween, cookies at Christmas, and general snacks no matter the time of year with a sign thanking them for their service.

FUN TIP: Surprise your delivery drivers by using your package lockers to leave a note with treats for them to find when they open it to deliver a resident package. (I’ve seen this done for customers at Home Depot’s delivery lockers!)

Thanking your delivery drivers isn’t just being neighborly and making someone’s day (although that may be the most important reason). Building rapport with your drivers can make a massive difference in compliance with your delivery protocol. One of the best ways to encourage drivers to follow those directions and to keep them going the extra mile for you is to recognize and reward that behavior.
